Bank of Texas Film and Lecture Series: “Refugees and Rescue: Scandinavian Responses to the Holocaust” and Opening Reception: “Denmark: October 1943”
October 17, 2013 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Location Albert and Ethel Herzstein Theater
October 2013 marks the 70th anniversary of the Danish rescue of the Jewish people of Denmark. In this public lecture, Cecilie Felicia Stokholm Banke, Ph.D., senior researcher in foreign policy at the Danish Institute for International Studies in Denmark and Karin Kvist Geverts, Ph.D., teacher and researcher in the Department of History and the Hugo Valentin Centre at Uppsala University, Sweden, will discuss “Refugees and Rescue: Scandinavian Responses to the Holocaust.” This event is presented as part of the Bank of Texas Film and Lecture Series and is presented in conjunction with the poster exhibition “Denmark: October 1943.” Consisting of 11 framed posters, the display tells the story of rescue and resistance against Nazi persecution. Approximately 7,200 lives were saved, through the efforts of Danish citizens who ferried Danish Jews by boat to the safety in Sweden. The exhibition is traveled by The Danish Immigrant Museum in Elk Horn, Iowa. The preview reception on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, has reached its seating capacity, and we are no longer able to accept reservations. The exhibit will remain on view through Nov. 3, 2013.
