HMH Members Book Club: “Something Remains: Understanding the Holocaust”

What would it have been like to live in early Nazi Germany? Or, be a student at that time?  How could the Holocaust have happened? Even though you learned about the Holocaust in school, do you still want to know more?Something Remains

If so, join the Holocaust Museum Houston members-only book club as we read the novel “Something Remains,” by Inge Barth-Grözinger. There will be two separate book clubs:  one for youth in grades 6 through 10 and one for adults. These newly-formed groups will allow for a close reading of this novel and allow participants to apply historical fiction to deepen and enrich an understanding of how the Holocaust occurred, learn about one individual’s experience and one town’s experiences during the early years of the Nazi period and analyze the complexity of the events of the early parts of the Holocaust and individual reactions to those events.

The clubs will meet three times – all on Thursday evenings, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. – on March 10, April 14 and April 28. The book clubs are only open to members and their school-age children.

Space is limited for the book clubs and registration must be completed by Feb. 28, 2011. Registration is open on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost for the book club is $10 per person, which includes a copy of the book.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Erich Levi doesn’t understand why his father is so gloomy when the Nazis are elected to power. He’s too concerned with keeping his grades up, finding time to hang out by the river with his friends, and studying for his bar mitzvah, to worry about politics.

But slowly, gradually, things begin to change for Erich. Some of the teachers begin to grade him unfairly – because he’s Jewish. The Hitler Youth boys in his class bully him, and he's excluded from sporting events and celebrations. His whole world seems to be crumbling: at school, and at home, where money is tight because no one wants to do business with a Jewish family.

Not everyone is so cruel, though, and many of the Levis’ friends and neighbors remain fiercely loyal at great risk to themselves. With good people still around, Erich can’t believe the situation will last, and stubbornly holds onto his dreams – even as his homeland becomes a dangerous and alien place.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Inge Barth-Grözinger is a gymnasium (high school) teacher in Ellwangen, Germany. "Something Remains" grew out of an 18-month research project she conducted with her students, tracing the Jewish community of their town and school. It was the story of one student in particular, Erich Levi, that inspired Ms. Grözinger to write this novel.
